PUBLIC SAFETY NOTIFICATION / 2010 – 2014 TOYOTA PRIUS AND PRIUS V (Certain Vehicles)
Dear Toyota Prius Owner,
It has recently come to our attention that there may be a potential significant safety concern related to the above mentioned Priuses. We have identified that a number of Priuses have suffered Inverter/component failures. If this occurs, various warning lamps on the instrument panel will illuminate. In most cases the vehicle will enter a fail-safe mode (limp home mode), resulting in reduced motive power in which the vehicle can still be driven for short distances. In limited instances, the motor/generator ECU could reset, causing the hybrid system to shut down, resulting in the vehicle stopping while being driven and increasing the risk of a crash. We are compelled to make you aware that this is a possibility and ask that you make all drivers of this vehicle aware that this potential exists. We also suggest that you explain the “limp home” mode to them. If this happens, please bring your vehicle in and we will fix it. Safety is our concern.
Toyota had previously issued a safety recall (Recall EOE-Prius / FOR Prius V) to reflash software in the Prius Inverter. Vehicles continue to suffer Inverter failure even after having Recall EOE-Prius / FOR Prius V completed. Therefore, we have asked Toyota to address this ongoing safety concern, but we have yet to receive a response. We hope to have more information for you once Toyota responds. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you and your families, but we believe you need to be aware of this serious condition. As an added precaution, we have removed these vehicles from our lot and issued our own “stop sale” until this can be resolved in a safe way. We appreciate your confidence and will do our best to make sure we earn it now and in the future.
To make it clear, this is not a Toyota-issued recall, service campaign or extended warranty, but rather a dealer initiated safety notification to our customers.
The February 7, 2018 edition of the Los Angeles Times featured an investigative story about our ongoing concerns regarding the faulty inverters in certain 2010-2014 Toyota Prius vehicles.
We have done our best to advise you and to push Toyota to issue a permanent safety remedy. We are deeply concerned that these cars pose unreasonable risks of accidents and bodily injury and that they continue to endanger thousands of Toyota drivers, passengers, families and others on the road. We have tried to work with Toyota to make our customers safer. They have failed to respond adequately to our safety concerns. We find this unacceptable and inexcusable.
As you can read in the story in the LA Times, we have filed a lawsuit against Toyota. We cannot in good conscience sell these cars to anyone until and unless these safety violations are properly fixed by Toyota. Currently, we have more than 65 2010-2015 Prius vehicles on ‘stop sale’ order as we refuse jeopardize the safety of anyone who depends on our dealerships.
